Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate energy balance and body composition in 42 gymnasts (mean age = 15.5 yr) and 20 runners (mean age = 26.6 yr), all of whom were on national teams or were nationally ranked.
Results: Results from the CTLEA were assessed as the number of within-day energy deficits (largest and frequency) and within-day energy surpluses (largest and frequency). There was a significant difference (P = 0.000) in the mean number of hourly energy deficits > 300 kcal experienced by gymnasts (9.45 +/- 6.00) and runners (3.70 +/- 5.34). There was also a significant difference (P = 0.001) in the mean number of hourly energy surpluses > 300 kcal experienced by gymnasts (1.40 +/- 3.04) and runners (6.20 +/- 5.50). The mean largest daily energy deficit was 743 (+/- 392) kcal for gymnasts and 435 (+/- 340) kcal for runners. The mean largest daily energy surplus was 239 (+/- 219) kcal for gymnasts, and 536 (+/- 340) kcal for runners. There was a significant relationship between the number of daily energy deficits > 300 kcal and DEXA-derived body fat percent for gymnasts (r = 0.508; P = 0.001) and for runners (r = 0.461; P = 0.041). There was also a negative relationship between the largest daily energy surplus and DEXA-derived body fat percentage for gymnasts (r = -0.418; P = 0.003). Using the energy balance variables, age, and athlete type (artistic gymnast, rhythmic gymnast, middle-distance runner, long-distance runner) as independent variables in a forward stepwise regression analysis, a small but significant amount of variance was explained in DEXA-derived (P = 0.000; R2 = 0.309) and skinfold-derived (P = 0.000; R2 = 0.298) body fat percent by the number of energy deficits > 300 kcal and age.
In 2012, the U.S. won the team all-around for the second time. This team, which was nicknamed the \"Fierce Five\", featured five gymnasts who were all making their first appearance at the Olympics.[11] That year, Gabby Douglas won the gold medal in individual all-around, and Aly Raisman won the gold medal in floor exercise.[12][13]
Gymnastics events have been staged at the Olympic Games since 1896.[1] British female gymnasts have participated in every Summer Olympics since 1928, except for 1932.[2][3] British women have won four medals at the Olympics: the 1928 team all-around bronze; the 2012 uneven bars bronze, which was won by Beth Tweddle; the 2016 floor exercise bronze, won by Amy Tinkler; and the 2021 team all-around bronze.[2][4][5][6][7] Tweddle and Pat Hirst are the only British female gymnasts who have competed in at least three Olympics.[8][9]
A prospective study of injuries affecting 50 highly competitive young female gymnasts was conducted over a period of 1 year. Many of the findings of this investigation were consistent with previous studies and suggest particular injury trends in women's gymnastics. These results included injury location, injury severity, nature of onset, event, and activity at the time of injury. Some of the descriptive results, however, provided information that was heretofore unreported or inconsistent with previous investigations. These findings involved injury rate, reinjury rate, time loss, injury type, hours of practice, and incidence of physician-seen injuries. Some of these findings were disturbing and echo concerns registered in the professional literature. In particular, the reinjury rate is alarming and points to the need for complete rehabilitation before return to full participation. The results of the analytic component of the study alluded to the potential role of competitive level and maturation rate in the profile of the injury-prone gymnast. Specifically, rapid periods of growth and advanced levels of training and competition appeared to be related to injury proneness. Pursuant to the descriptive and analytic results of the investigation, recommendations for injury prevention and continued research are made.
For decades, female gymnasts have worn bikini-cut leotards. In qualifying on Sunday, however, the German team instead wore unitards that stretched to their ankles, intending to push back against sexualization of women in gymnastics.
The Tokyo Olympics are the first Summer Games since Larry Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics national team doctor, was sent to prison for 176 years for sexually abusing hundreds of gymnasts, including some of the sport's greatest stars. At his sentencing, athletes -- some of them Olympians -- described how the sport's culture allowed for abuse and objectification of young women and girls.
On Fri Feb. 11, the Woodinville Lady Falcons gymnasts capped of the season with a post season win at the combined District championships that included 15 different 4A teams from King County, Wesco from up north, and Spokane/Tri Cities!.
The top two overall scoring teams earned the ability to send *all* of their post-season team athletes to states. Team Woodinville is positioned well and will be able to compete the maximum number of athletes in each state event. The Lady Falcon gymnasts are the defending state champions, and their performance at Districts left little doubt as to how strong they are again this year too.
Simone Biles is an artistic gymnast. Having won a combined total of 30 World Championship and Olympic medals, Biles is the world's third-most decorated gymnast and the most decorated in America. Regarded as the greatest gymnast of all time by some, Simone Biles continues to inspire several aspiring gymnasts around the world, especially gymnasts from the black community.
Shannon Miller is a former artistic gymnast who is one of the most decorated US female gymnasts in Olympics history. She is the winner of seven Olympic medals, including the five she won at the 1992 Olympics, and 16 World Championships. She is a member of the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame and the United States Olympic Hall of Fame.
Alicia Sacramone is a retired artistic gymnast who won a silver medal with the United States team at the 2008 Summer Olympics. With a total of 11 Olympic and World Championship medals, she is one of the most decorated U.S. female gymnasts. She is also a spokeswoman for a fitness company and has appeared in a few commercials.
Nadia Comaneci is a Romanian former gymnast. One of the best-known gymnasts in the world, Comaneci has five Olympic gold medals under her belt. Credited with popularizing gymnastics around the world, Nadia Comaneci was honored by the Laureus World Sports Academy by including her in their Athletes of the 20th Century list in 2000.
Irish-born gymnasts of Azerbaijani origin, Jennifer Gadirova and her twin, Jessica, have both excelled at artistic gymnastics at the international level. Jennifer has not only won an Olympic bronze for Britain but also became the first British gymnast to earn a Junior World Championship medal, with her silver win in 2019.
The U.S. women's gymnastics team has set a new record for consecutive world titles. With a gold medal at the world championships in Liverpool, England on Tuesday, the U.S. gymnasts are now atop the record books with their sixth consecutive world title.
The American gymnasts did all this without stars Simone Biles and Suni Lee, who have not competed since the Tokyo Olympics, where they won silver in the all-around. Neither of those athletes have committed to the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.
Landing is a fundamental skill in artistic gymnastics, practiced continually throughout all levels and using various types of landing mats. The aim of the current study was to investigate how the vertical ground reaction forces (VGRF), knee and ankle joint kinematics changes during gymnasts landing on different types of landing mats with FIG certification. Four young active female gymnasts performed 10 trials of landing to two type of mats. Synchronized kinematic and kinetic data were collected for each trial. Effect size statistics determined individual and group mean differences between landing conditions. The preliminary results of the current study suggested that the PROTOTYPE of landing mat reduces the VGRF and thus may decrease the impact forces acting on the lower limbs in gymnastics.
It's no secret that women's gymnastics highly values youth. During the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, a major scandal occurred in which a few Chinese gymnasts, listed as 16, might actually have been as young as 14 or 15. Meanwhile, the average age of this year's Men's USA Gymnastics team is 25-years-old.
Gymnastics is a very physically demanding sport, and training to be the very best involves a lot of personal sacrifice. Yet, this does not exactly explain why there seems to be more older male than female gymnasts. So INSIDER spoke with Tabitha Yim, the head coach of the University of Arizona's gymnastics program.
Gymnasts must remain on the lean side of lean to be effective competitors at the highest level (Nelson et al., 1983; Sands et al., 1992, 1995). Not surprisingly, concern about excess body weight is common in gymnastics (Anorexia/Bulimia Association, 1994; American College of Sports Medicine, 1997; Leglise, 1998; Nattiv & Lynch, 1994). Female gymnasts and their coaches in the US are therefore reluctant to use weight training, in spite of abundant evidence of the benefits of weight training for sports requiring strength. Their concern is that the gymnast will develop excessive body and muscle mass (\"bulk up\") and thus become too heavy to perform effectively.
Gymnasts and other athletes who must move their body weight as the primary resistance need to train for strength relative to body mass rather than absolute strength (Poliquin, 1991; Sands, Mikesky, & Edwards, 1991). As the gymnast matures, she is likely to gain absolute strength but lose relative strength as her body mass increases (Sands et al., 1991; Irvin et al., 1992; Zatsiorsky, 1995). Female gymnasts can increase reliance on motor skills to compensate for a decline in relative strength (Poliquin, 1991; Zatsi
